CHINA COMICS NOW: ARTIST BIOGRAPHIES
A genius at dazzling, digitally painted artwork, Benjamin is the pen-name of Zhang Bin, writer and artist, rock star and poster boy of modern Chinese comics. Born May 16 1974 in the province of Hei Long Jiang, he studied first at the fashion and design school. In 1996 he moved to Beijing to make comics, living off menial jobs. It was only in the spring of 2000 that his first manhua story, Flowers Unknown In Summer, was published by Comic Fans Magazine.
His first graphic novel, One Day, came out in 2002 as well as two volumes of Comics Techniques By Computer. After a brief time in advertising illustration, he decided to make comics his sole profession and set about creating Remember which appeared in October 2002 in China. This is to be published in English by TokyoPop. In 2005 his first prose novel The Basement was published. Benjamin is considered one of the masters of new Chinese comics. A new art book of his latest work will be published in March by Xiao Pan to coincide with his first ever visit to the UK for the Manhua! exhibition. You can read his blog here.
